Data Recovery

ZSphere provides multiple data recovery methods for different recovery scenarios:

You can restore an entire virtual machine from backup data to a specified location. For more information, see Restore a VM from Backup.
You can create a new virtual machine directly from backup data. For more information, see Create a VM from Backup.
You can restore the platform from backup data to a specified point in time. For more information, see Restore the Platform Database from Backup.

Restore a VM from Backup

If a virtual machine fails, you can restore the virtual machine from backup data to the latest backup point or an earlier backup point.

Before you begin

Make sure the virtual machine has at least one successfully generated backup data point.
Before restoring a virtual machine in overwrite mode, shut down the virtual machine.
To restore a virtual machine from remote backup data, synchronize the remote backup data to local backup storage first.

Procedure

In the navigation pane, choose Data Protection > Protected Resources.
On the Protected Resources page, select the Virtual Machine tab.
Select the backup data of the virtual machine to be restored, and then click Restore.
In the Restore Virtual Machine dialog, choose whether to automatically start the VM after restoration as needed.
Review the information and click OK.

Note: Restoring a virtual machine overwrites the current VM data and restores VM data to the selected backup data point. Proceed with caution.

Create a VM from Backup

If a virtual machine fails, you can create a new virtual machine directly from backup data. This recovery method is non-destructive. It does not overwrite the existing VM, but creates a new VM from the backup data.

Before you begin

Make sure the virtual machine has at least one successfully generated backup data point.
Make sure the platform has sufficient compute, storage, and network resources for the new VM.
To create a VM from remote backup data, synchronize the remote backup data to local backup storage first.

Procedure

In the navigation pane, choose Data Protection > Protected Resources.
On the Protected Resources page, select the Virtual Machine tab.
Select the backup data of the virtual machine to be restored, and then click Create VM.

In the Create VM from Backup dialog, configure the following options:

Backup Information

Option	Description
Backup Data	Displays the selected backup data.

Basic Information

Option	Description
Name	Name of the virtual machine.
Quantity	Default is 1 and cannot be modified.
Group	Group to which the VM belongs. If this parameter is not set, the default group is used.
Running Location	Host or cluster where the VM runs.
Operating System	Displays the VM operating system recorded in the backup data.
High Availability	Automatic restart mechanism after abnormal VM shutdown. For more information, see VM HA Policy.
Power Status	Choose whether to automatically start the VM after it is created.

Hardware Information

Option	Description
CPU	Supports adjusting the total number of cores.
Memory	Supports adjusting the memory size.
Disk	Displays the disk configuration recorded in the backup data and cannot be modified.
NIC	Supports adjusting the port group, MAC address, IP address, DNS allocation mode, and security group. Click Add NIC to add a NIC to the VM. You can customize the address and features of the new NIC.

Review the configuration and click OK.

What to do next

Some VM configurations depend on VMTools. After the VM is created, install VMTools to make these configurations take effect. For more information about VMTools, see Install and Use VMTools.

Restore the Platform Database from Backup

Restore the platform from backup data to a specified backup point.

Before you begin

Restoring the platform database requires restarting the management node, during which the management UI is unavailable. This process usually takes several minutes and does not affect your service resources.
Resources deleted after the backup point become invalid data and cannot be restored to a normal state by restoring the platform database.

Procedure

In the navigation pane, choose Data Protection > Protected Resources.
On the Protected Resources page, select the Platform Database tab.
Select the storage location of the platform database backup file, such as Local Backup or Remote Backup.
In the platform database backup list, select the backup data to be restored, and then click Actions > Restore.
In the Restore Platform Database dialog, enter the root password of the platform database.
Review the information and click OK.

What to do next

After the database is restored, all platform resources are restored to the state when the backup was created. Go to Data Protection > Backup Storage, select the backup storage, and then click Actions > Scan Backup Data to obtain current backup data information.
