Issue/Introduction

This article helps troubleshoot cases where a ZSphere virtual machine cannot be cloned or the Clone button is unavailable.

Symptoms

  • The Clone button on the virtual machine details page is unavailable, or cloning cannot be started.
  • Some virtual machines in the same platform can be cloned, while others cannot.

Environment

  • Product: ZVF
  • Version: 4.x, 5.x
  • Component: ZSphere
  • Affected object: virtual machine cloning
  • Scenario: For migration and cloning issues, confirm the current version, deployment type, storage type, and operation timeline.

Possible causes

  • The virtual machine has a shared volume, RDM volume, or special passthrough device attached, and the current cloning capability does not support this combination.
  • Image storage, primary storage, backup storage, or data storage is disconnected, so a volume snapshot cannot be committed or an intermediate image for cloning cannot be created.
  • The virtual machine status or snapshot chain does not meet cloning prerequisites.

Resolution

Perform the following checks in order, and record the affected object, occurrence time, complete error message, and current status.

  1. Confirm whether the virtual machine has a shared volume, RDM volume, or special passthrough device attached.
  2. Check whether image storage, primary storage, backup storage, and data storage are online.
  3. Review Task Center and management service logs to identify the specific reason why cloning capability validation failed.
  4. If storage is disconnected, restore the storage connection and capacity status before starting cloning again.
  5. If the task involves a volume snapshot, confirm whether the snapshot is still required by rollback, backup, cloning, or image creation. Do not delete the snapshot object directly from the underlying system.

Remediation

  1. Remove or adjust shared volumes, RDM volumes, or special passthrough devices that do not support cloning, and then start cloning again.
  2. If storage is disconnected or capacity is insufficient, restore the storage connection and capacity status first. For snapshot dependencies, use the managed interface or contact ZStack official technical support.

Verification

  • The Clone button is available, and the cloning task completes successfully.
  • The new virtual machine configuration, disks, and network meet expectations, and the source virtual machine and associated storage are normal.
