Issue/Introduction
This article helps troubleshoot failure to load the kvm_intel module when adding a ZSphere HCI host.
Symptoms
- Adding a host as a compute node fails, and stderr shows that the
kvm_intelmodule cannot be inserted. - The error includes
modprobe: could not insert kvm_intel: Operation not supported.
Environment
- Product: ZVF
- Version: 4.x
- Component: ZSphere
- Affected object: add host
- Scenario: For host and hardware issues, confirm the current version, deployment type, storage type, and operation timeline.
Possible causes
- BIOS virtualization or VT-d or IOMMU is not enabled.
- The CPU or kernel module does not match the current hardware platform, or it is disabled by a security policy.
- Server firmware, BIOS configuration, or kernel parameters affect KVM module loading.
Resolution
Perform the following checks in order, and record the affected object, occurrence time, complete error message, and current status.
- Confirm the CPU model and virtualization capabilities, and check the
vmxorsvmflag. - Verify BIOS virtualization, VT-d or IOMMU, Secure Boot, and other settings.
- Use read-only checks to review the reason for the
dmesgandmodprobeerrors. Avoid changing kernel parameters directly. - For a hardware or firmware compatibility issue, retain the server model, BIOS version, and kernel version, and contact ZStack official technical support for confirmation.
Remediation
- Enable CPU virtualization, VT-d or IOMMU, and other required capabilities in the BIOS, and adjust related secure boot configuration as required by the server vendor.
- If the module still cannot load, retain hardware, firmware, kernel, and error logs, and ask ZStack official technical support to confirm the compatibility remediation plan.
Verification
- The
kvm_intelmodule loads normally, and the system logs contain no similar errors. - The host can be added successfully and provides virtualization capabilities.
