Issue
Use this article to troubleshoot VMTools installation failures on ZSphere VMs.
Symptoms
- VMTools installation in the VM reports that installation cannot be completed.
- Installing VMTools fails after selecting the installation action for a newly created VM.
Environment
- Product: ZVF
- Version: 4.3.1
- Component: ZSphere
- Affected object: VMTools
- Scenario: VM runtime issues. Confirm the current version, deployment topology, storage type, and operation timeline.
Possible causes
- The boot order does not meet the requirements for mounting VMTools or recognizing the installation media.
- The CD-ROM/disk boot order affects recognition of the installation media.
- AutoPlay, drivers, or permissions in the guest OS cause the installation to fail.
Resolution
Perform the following checks in sequence, and record the affected objects, occurrence time, complete error messages, and current state.
- Confirm the VM power state, CD-ROM mount state, and boot order.
- Set the boot order to hard disk first and CD-ROM second, then remount the installation media.
- In the guest OS, confirm that the installation media is present and run the installer manually.
- Retain the VM OS version, VMTools version, and screenshots of the installation error.
Remediation
- Set the VM boot order to hard disk first and CD-ROM second.
- Remount the VMTools installation media and rerun the installation in the guest OS.
Verification
- The guest OS recognizes the installation media and completes VMTools installation.
- After installation, the VM status information and basic management functions work normally.
