Issue/Introduction
This article helps troubleshoot failures to pass LUNs through to virtual machines when ZSphere integrates with 3PAR iSCSI active-active storage.
Symptoms
- The underlying host can scan LUNs of sizes such as
1Gand5T. - The LUN is visible when primary storage is created in the UI, but the virtual machine cannot complete LUN passthrough.
Environment
- Product: ZVF
- Version: 4.10.16
- Component: ZSphere
- Affected object: iSCSI or RDM
- Scenario: For storage and passthrough issues, confirm the current version, deployment type, storage type, and operation timeline.
Possible causes
- iSCSI active-active, multipath, or RDM passthrough capability does not match the capability boundary of the current version.
- LUN device attributes, path count, WWID, or host-group mapping do not meet passthrough requirements.
- The target virtual machine disk controller, bus type, or storage policy does not support this passthrough method.
Resolution
Perform the following checks in order, and record the affected object, occurrence time, complete error message, and current status.
- Confirm the storage model, active-active topology, iSCSI target, host-group mapping, and LUN attributes.
- On all candidate hosts, use read-only checks to confirm LUN visibility, multipath status, and WWID consistency.
- Verify the capability boundary of the current ZSphere version for iSCSI, RDM, and LUN passthrough.
- Before passthrough, use a non-production virtual machine to verify mounting, restart, migration, and HA behavior.
Remediation
- First confirm the support scope of the current ZSphere version for 3PAR iSCSI active-active storage and LUN passthrough.
- After completing LUN mounting, restart, migration, and HA verification on a non-production virtual machine, evaluate production use. Contact ZStack official technical support when the support scope or topology is unclear.
Verification
- The test virtual machine can identify and stably access the passed-through LUN.
- Restart, migration, and HA tests do not produce multipath or device consistency issues.
